A great gardening time saver is applying a thick layer of mulch around plants. I have used grass clippings as mulch on my garden. Grass clippings can be a great choice, because they are readily available for most of us and do not add extra cost. Applying a layer of mulch greatly reduces the number of weeds, retains moisture, adds nutrients to the soil, and reduces soil born diseases. Time needed for pulling weeds and watering is greatly reduced. Be sure that the grass has not been recently treated with weed killer, since this could kill your garden plants. One caution is to keep the mulch away from stems as this could cause them to rot. You can read more about benefits and cautions at http://www.organicgardening.com/learn-and-grow/mulch?page=0,1
